Biography:
Scott Ryan Nazzarine joined Sirkin Pinales & Schwartz in 2005, where he passionately defends individual liberty against all forms of governmental abuse. His history of dedicated political activism and community service have prepared him well to serve the legal profession and to zealously represent clients in court.
Mr. Nazzarine graduated manga cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Ohio University in 2001 with a B.A. in English and a minor in Political Science. While at OU, he was president and co-founder of the Ohio University Libertarians and ran for a seat in Ohio’s House of Representatives on the Libertarian ticket. He received his law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 2004 and was sixth in his class, graduating with the prestigious Order of the Coif distinction. Mr. Nazzarine was elected Executive Editor of the UC Law Review, after having his article, “A Faceless Name in the Crowd: Freedom of Association, Equal Protection, and Discriminatory Ballot Access Laws,” published therein. 72 U.Cin.L.Rev. 309 (2003). He was also a member of UC’s student court and the Public Interest Law Group and was class representative to the Student Bar Association. While at UC Law, Mr. Nazzarine also externed for the Honorable Arthur S. Spiegel, United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Ohio. Following law school, Mr. Nazzarine clerked for the Honorable Judge Robert G. James, United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Louisiana.
Mr. Nazzarine’s legal accomplishments and notable cases mirror his libertarian leanings. While at Sirkin Pinales & Schwartz, he has represented one of the first animal rights activists to be charged under a new federal animal terrorism law, has challenged overbroad smoking bans in Kentucky and Ohio as violative of private property rights and due process, and developed the prototype substantive due process motion that has lead at least two federal courts to invalidate obscenity laws on privacy grounds. In addition, Mr. Nazzarine has filed an amicus brief on behalf of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, has represented a political activist in a jury trial who had been charged with trespassing for protesting the Iraq war at a Congressman’s office, has defended clients on drug charges in both state and federal courts, and has represented numerous adult businesses in various capacities. Mr. Nazzarine is an active member of the First Amendment Lawyers Association, and also belongs to the Ohio State and Cincinnati Bar Associations and the Greater Cincinnati Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
Mr. Nazzarine is admitted to practice before the Ohio Supreme Court and all courts in Ohio, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Third, Fifth, and Sixth Circuits, and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
In addition to practicing law, Mr. Nazzarine is also active in the greater Cincinnati community. He serves as Vice President of the Columbia Tusculum Community Development Corporation and gathers signatures for ballot initiatives as a member of the We Demand a Vote Coalition. He has also volunteered his time as a student teacher in the Street Law Program, mentored an at-risk youth through the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, and currently assists in teaching a class on Habeas Corpus and Post-Conviction Remedies at UC Law. Mr. Nazzarine is also an ordained reverend in the Universal Life Church. His hobbies include traveling, organic gardening, creative writing, camping, hiking, motorcycles, music, politics, and animals.
